With the completion of your B.Tech in Computer Science degree, you’re beginning to think about a world beyond the last classes and exams. Studying heavily and taking various exams is tiring and all-consuming too.

Everyone has their ideas about what they can do after attaining their degree. Not every idea is a great one when thinking more seriously about it.

We have three suggestions below which go into some detail about three possible routes you can take after completing your Computer Science degree. They offer the possibility of educational improvement, career growth, and increased salary.

Scope after B-tech Computer science

One of the best opportunities for new graduates is to apply for an entry-level IT position at a prestigious company. There are many larger corporations always looking for ambitious graduates who are willing to work hard to learn their jobs and advance in their company.

Bigger companies offer many opportunities that smaller ones do not. There will often be the chance to apply for a more senior position whereas a smaller company doesn’t always need another person at a higher level which can cause frustration for employees looking to move up.

You don’t always have to find another job in another company to advance when you already work for a substantial and growing business. Many IT corporations like Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco Systems India, IBM India, Dell, and Infosys Technologies have been set up in India and are taking on local IT employees.

There are also jobs within government-related or owned businesses such as the Airport Authority of India, Food Corporation of India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Bharat Electronics Limited, and many more.

When working for a major corporation, they are invested in your continual development. They may sponsor continued studies for professional certifications or other courses that they deem of value.

It costs companies money to find good employees and to provide additional training for them, so it pays to look after them. It’s good for them and good for you too.

Continue your study after B-Tech

Another option is to continue your studies by taking different further courses like an advanced or specialized degree, or professional IT certifications to advance your CV.

Some may pursue these while working full-time or part-time, but others require your total focus. The idea here is to further improve your attractiveness to a potential employee by looking at several CVs from recent graduates with the same Computer Science degree. Having something extra separates you from the pack.

• M.Tech – The MSc Tech or Master of Engineering degree is a way to advance into engineering. There are popular institutes like NIT, CFTI, and IIT where most students complete their studies.

It’s necessary to get a higher grade in the annual GATE exams where competition is fierce. There are also private engineering schools and colleges that have their entrance qualification exam to complete instead of the GATE one where competition may be less of an issue.

It may also be easier (or harder) to pass a private engineering qualification exam when applying for a private school.

• MPhil & PhD – There is the option to study for either a PhD or to take an MPhil instead. The basic difference between the two courses is that the PhD is a higher qualification than the MPhil.

While a dissertation is a requirement for the MPhil, a full in-depth thesis is required when completing the PhD to graduate. The MPhil is also shorter in study duration for most students with a two-year course path being entirely possible.

The MPhil won’t be as favored as a PhD, however, you can begin a career at an advanced level at least a year sooner in some cases. Starting sooner, you can earn more in that first year and save on the additional tuition costs for the PhD which is usually more expensive too.

There is also the option to study for professional certifications. These could be Cisco networking exams, and Microsoft or Oracle exams, to name a few.

These are ideal when a student knows what specialized employment route they wish to go down such as a network administrator or an Oracle database management specialist where such certifications are prerequisites for employment.

Opportunities with a Short Course (SEO, Java, Web designing, .NET, PHP, Digital Marketing, etc.)

The other route is to take a short course covering a particular subject matter either for the first time or in more depth than was possible with the Computer Science degree.

This could mean studying a professional or web design course to learn how to put together a good WordPress site, design a logo, or perform other related tasks. It could also mean digging deeper into programming with a course on an object-oriented language like Java or a complex server-side language like .NET or PHP.

You could also choose to learn about digital marketing courses and search engine optimization (SEO). This teaches you how to produce websites, use social media, and market the sites using links.

You can also provide services that are useful to other people once you have enough skills in digital marketing. Whether working directly with clients or producing your niche sites, you can generate a good living working independently of an employer.

There are many ways to continue your growth once you qualify for your degree and are looking ahead to what comes next. No one route is wrong or right. It’s more a matter of what your priorities are and what aspects of Computer Science you’re best at. Then double down on those.
